Marine-i launches Awards scheme to shine spotlight on marine tech innovation success

9th January 2023

Marine-i have announced the launch of an awards scheme to celebrate the culmination of the project in Spring 2023.

The winners will be announced at the project’s Marine Technology and Innovation Showcase  event taking place at the Atlantic Hotel, Newquay on March 3rd 2023.

Part funded by the European Regional Development Fund, the Marine-i project has run since 2017 and since then, it has supported nearly 200 businesses, accelerating innovation and supporting businesses towards commercialisation of their new products and services.

The 2023 Awards scheme aims to shine a spotlight on those marine tech businesses supported by Marine-i that have shown exceptional success.

Applications are invited in three categories:

  • Impact on Cornwall: For the individual or business that has made an outstanding commercial impact through its application of research, development and innovation through Marine-i, thereby putting Cornwall on the map in their particular field of business. This may include promoting Cornwall as a centre of excellence more broadly across the UK and overseas.
  • Game Changing Innovation: For the individual or business that has through Marine-i, made an outstanding contribution to technological innovation or has developed an outstandingly innovative technology, which may or may not have yet been commercialised. This could be a new or different use of technology that has led to a breakthrough.
  • Best new start up: For the business that is the best new start-up venture established since 2016 that has worked with Marine-i.  This may include new divisions of existing businesses as well as completely new companies.

Nominations will be assessed according to the following criteria: originality; applicability to the selected award category; strength of innovation; and scope of technology challenge. Additional recognition will be given to those which demonstrate collaboration, sustainability and development towards net zero.

Marine-i Programme Director Lars Johanning of University of Exeter says: “The sheer ingenuity and entrepreneurship demonstrated by the businesses Marine-i has been privileged to support is astounding. These Awards will set out to highlight the most outstanding achievements. They will help showcase the significant potential  of the marine tech sector in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, which is carving out a strong reputation on the world stage.”

Marine-i will create short videos of the three shortlisted businesses in each category and these will be presented at the event on March 3rd 2023 as well as shared across Marine-i networks.

Nominations may be made by the business entering for an award, or by a third party on their behalf. The closing date for entries is Friday the 27th January, 2023.

The application forms, which include full details of terms and conditions, can be downloaded here.
