Innovation in Marine Technology for Aquaculture: Challenges & Opportunities

12th November 2020 @ 09:30-11:30

This online event will explore the potential for innovation in aquaculture technology.

Novel aquaculture, particularly growing seaweed, is attracting increasing interest in the UK and Europe. This is due to its potential as a highly sustainable source of food, materials and energy. Furthermore, growing seaweed can have a positive influence on local marine environments.

Despite high costs for trial farms, the potential of this new industry has been demonstrated at small scale. The challenge is now to build on this to create larger-scale cost-effective seaweed cultivation.

Large-scale cultivation presents new challenges for technology, operating procedures and management.  The high level of interest in this sector presents an opportunity for innovation, both in techniques for cultivation and products based on seaweed. This Discovery Room will review progress around Europe to date and outline the challenges to move to the next stage of development. It will explore the potential of companies based in Cornwall and Isles of Scilly to meet these challenges  and highlight research support available through Marine-i.
