Hydrogen, the route to Net-Zero

Offshore wind with green hydrogen is a major UK opportunity. The UK has outstanding offshore wind resource, with the potential for over 600GW in UK waters, and potentially up to 1000GW, well above the figure of 75-100GW likely to be needed for UK electricity generation by 2050. This opens the possibility of growing the offshore wind industry beyond electricity requirements, producing green hydrogen for export as offshore wind costs continue to fall.
The industrial base is strong. The UK has an established industry base to build on with the offshore industry itself, the oil and gas industry with BP and Shell developing Net Zero compatible strategies, and companies on the demand side such as Johnson Matthey, Wright Bus, Alexander Dennis, Baxi, and Worcester Bosch.
Our universities provide the underpinning science and engineering for electrolysers, fuel cells, and hydrogen, and are home to world-leading capability in these areas.
Marine-i will be hosting this Discovery Room on ZOOM, facilitated by Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult. Speakers will present the strategy for the UK’s Hydrogen Roadmap, discuss some of the leading projects demonstrating generation, distribution and storage. University of Exeter will discuss their research into electrolysers and energy storage. The purpose is to provide an overview of the latest thinking and providing the opportunity for SMEs to get involved and understand where there are market gaps and opportunities.
The ORE Catapults 2020 report “Solving the Hydrogen Integration Challenge” estimates a cumulative GVA of £320billion between now and 2050. This global market for equipment and hydrogen includes £250billion of electrolyser exports. A further potential £48billion from green hydrogen exports to Europe, would need an additional 240GW of Offshore Wind.
